Medicine Hat’s very own “Champion of Change” has been named honorary parade marshal for this year’s Exhibition and Stampede.

Bob Davisson — whose work building schools and feeding children in poverty stricken Haiti earned him national recognition earlier this year as CBC’s top“Champion of Change” — told reporters at a Stampede news conference on Monday that not only will the honour give his charity Lifeline Haiti more exposure, but it will makea great story for the children of Haiti. “For me, it will be like having the 13,000 children we’re helping in Haiti riding with me,” Davisson said.“I’m going to take the pictures back to the children, and it will be a chance to explain a little bit about Medicine Hat, and what a rodeo is, and what our culture is like.”

ANNUAL STAMPEDE PARADE MAKES A ROUTE CHANGE

Your carefully selected parade viewing spot may not be the one you want this year.

Due to the downtown road construction, the annual Stampede Parade Route will be adjusted.

“The set up areas will remain the same, it’s at the beginning and at the end of the parade that things start to change,” says Stampede Parade Marshal Mike Hirsch.

Hirsch says the committee met with the City department to make the parade route work for both viewing and safety purposes during the construction phase of downtown streets and sidewalks.

“Our main aim was to keep the parade still in the downtown core and keep the set up areas for entries exactly the same as last year and I know we have accomplished that,” Hirsch says.

The Parade route will follow 1st street westbound to 6th avenue, then a left turn on to 6th avenue, a left turn onto second street, a right turn onto South Railway, a right turn onto 3rd street all the way to 4th Avenue and then right towards the Medicine Hat Public Library where the Parade will disperse. Parade floats, vehicles can then use River Road to get back to the set up areas if needed.

Hirsch says that the Stampede Parade continues to be the official ‘kick off’ to Stampede and is viewed by over 10,000 people along with numerous television viewers in the days following.

“This is a great opportunity for business to contribute to the Stampede spirit, enter one of our 12 classes and gain some great exposure for your business or organization.”

Parade entry forms and information are available online at www.mhstampede.com, at the Stampede Office or at The UPS Store on Carry Drive.
